    Teaching procedures:

    Step 1 Greetings and lead-in

    T: Good morning, boys and girls! Today, I’m not only your teacher of English, but also your guide. I’ll lead you to a fantastic country.Which country is it? Let’s first enjoy part of a show!

    Ss: Scotland!

    T: Yes,but Scotland belongs to which country?

    Ss: Britain/ The UK.

    T: Right!Today we’ll have a look at Britain. How much do you know about Britain?

    (Some students are invited to show their knowledge of Britain.  )

    T:It seems that you know something about it. Actually, Britain has more than that.We are learning English, we know some English words and English grammar, but we know little about English culture. Just as an English writer says: “Modern man is educated to understand foreign language and misunderstand foreigners. ) Why do we “misunderstand foreigners”?

    Ss: Because we don’t know English culture!

    T: Ok! So let’s learn more about Enlish culture!

    Step 2 Pre-reading( Quiz)

    T: First, we’ll have a small quiz about Britain! Please look at the following three questions!

    1.  What parts does the UK(United Kingdom) consist of ?

    2.  What’s the full name of the UK?

    3.  Who actually rules the country?

    (Students show their opinions first, then the teacher make some supplements with the help of several slides. )

     

    Step 3 While-reading

    T: Now we know something about its geography and politics, let’s learn more things about its other sides. 

    1. Fast reading

    Go through the text quickly and pick out the key words of paras 3 – 6 with the help of exercise 1 on page 36.

    A.Read the text more carefully and decide whether the followings are true or false.

    . There are many Chinese restaurants in Britain.

    . You dont always need to leave a tip after a meal in a restaurant.

    . It is always foggy in London.

    . Some British mushrooms aren’t safe to eat.

    . British people never laugh.

    . Most British people are friendly.

    B.What is “culture shock”?

    T: Can you find one example mentioned in the text?

    (To help students’understanding, the teacher can give more specific examples.)

    3. Listening

    Grasp the following wordspronunciation

    “apology, absorb, expectations, foggy, exchange ,majority”

    (After listening, students are to read the words together. If there is something wrong, the teacher can give some corrections.)

    Step 4 Post- reading (showing pictures)

    T: Let’s get to know more about Britain: architecture,weather, transportation, universities, sport ,clothes and music.

    (As “architecture” is a new word for students, the teacher can encorage them to guess its meaning according to the given pictures.)

    Step 5 Promotion (Group discussion)

    T: Let’s turn to the same question that has been raised at the beginning of the class. How much do you know about Britain now?

    Ss:

    T: Ok. We all know in 2012 London will hold the 30th?

    Ss: Olympic Games!

    T: Right! If you were the director of 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony, how would you design it to surprise the whole world?

     Step 6 Summary (Comparison making)

    THow much do you know about Britain now?

    Ss:

    “Modern man is educated to understand foreign language and misunderstand foreigners. ”

    “We are educated to understand not only English language, but also English culture.”

     Step 7 Homework

    Do exercise 45 on page 37
